Research Evaluation Unit - REU
Research Evaluation Unit (REU): Core Responsibilities
The Research Evaluation Unit (REU) at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) is a specialized department dedicated to institutionalizing a culture of research among postgraduate trainees. It serves as the primary regulatory and advisory body for all research-related requirements of the FCPS program.
The unit's core responsibilities are categorized into three primary pillars:
1. Evaluation and Quality Assurance
The REU acts as the "gatekeeper" for the scientific validity of trainee research, ensuring all projects meet international academic standards.
- Synopsis/Protocol Evaluation: Every FCPS-II trainee is required to submit a research synopsis. The REU performs a comprehensive review of these protocols to ensure the methodology, sample size, and objectives are scientifically sound.
- Dissertation Assessment: The unit evaluates final dissertations to ensure they meet the rigorous standards required for Fellowship or Membership. (Note: This applies to overseas candidates subject to approval by the competent authority as per official notification).
- Plagiarism Monitoring: A critical responsibility is maintaining academic integrity. The REU utilizes specialized software to ensure similarity indices remain within permitted limits (typically below 19%).
- Approval & Management: The unit processes requests for research topics for Second Fellowships and manages any subsequent requests for changes in titles or methodologies.
2. Research Advisory and Mentorship
Beyond its evaluative role, the REU serves as a vital resource for both trainees and supervisors.
- Provision of Advisory Services: Led by qualified epidemiologists and a team of expert biostatisticians, the unit provides one-on-one consultations (via telephone or in-person appointments). These sessions help trainees resolve technical "observations" on their synopses.
- Facilitating Quality Writing: The REU provides guidance to trainees and trainers on drafting high-quality protocols and research articles that are scientifically robust and publishable.
3. Educational Development
The unit ensures that the training environment evolves in alignment with modern scientific standards.
- Workshop Facilitation: The REU plays a major role in organizing and conducting the mandatory Research Methodology, Biostatistics & Article Writing (RMB&AW) workshops.
- Material Upgradation: The unit is responsible for the continuous revision and upgrading of research-related teaching materials used across all CPSP regional centers.
- Standardization: The REU develops and implements policies to ensure that research evaluation remains standardized and consistent across all CPSP regional centers in Pakistan.
