During the year 1999 the CPSP initiated a mega project to introduce Information Technology (IT) based medical education and procured and commissioned computing and networking resources for all its Departments in Karachi as well as its Regional Centers along with automation of their manual workflow. State-of-the-art branded servers were installed at the CPSP Karachi and its Regional Centers.Servers provide policy-based resource sharing service. With the introduction of computers and the digitization process, operations of the College havegreatly improved. All departments of the CPSP Karachi are connected to a Network Operations Center (NOC) that enables Internet connectivity, Email communications, and sharing of files, folders and printers.
The Department of Information Technology was established by the CPSP in June 1999 with the initial objective of providing training on computer software applications to medical trainees. The Department was then located on the first floor of the Main Building and consisted of an I.T. Workshop.An Information Technology Instructor conducted the I.T. workshops on computer usage, application software, Internet and E-mail. Since then the scope of the I.T. Department has greatly increased and it now includes a Network Operations Center (NOC), I.T. Workshop Unit, Management Information System (MIS) Unit, Web Development Unit and a Help Desk.Security from hackers, viruses and other malicious code is assured. The NOC is the nerve center of the CPSP network backbone and it is from here that all I.T. services such as Internet, Intranet, E-mail andCentral Database Controlling are provided to computer users of the College.Video Conferencing facilities of the Department have proved to be convenient, efficient and time saving.
Reorganization of the Department
The Department was reorganized and will be further integrated sub section of IT department like Network Operations Center (NOC), I.T. Workshop Unit, Management Information System (MIS) Unit, Web Development Unit and a Help Desk Unit with all other departments through integrated MIS System to provide uninterrupted and prompt services to the CPSP community.
The Management Information System (MIS) Unit
The MIS Unit was established in 2009, the MIS team took the initiative to build ERP (Enterprise Recourse Planning) system for CPSP without any outside assistance.Developed Integrated MIS System with the technology of free, open-source, real-time online Management Information System, the entire process of compiling reports and submission for processing is alleviated, centralized data repository for whole CPSP to access trainee, supervisor and their related record.Constantly on the lookout for more and more cost-effective solutions to help with the management and administrative process, CPSP with substantial human resource and operational process is cope with multiple centers having various operations, ultimately helps with streamlining the decision making process, as the idea of the centralized online Management Information System is to eliminate the need for elaborate reports Currently online modules of said ERP for Examination, RTMC, REU and Finance are completely deployed and available online, HR and DME modules completed and in testing Phase which will be live on coming September 2011, Other similar modules will take about a year or so forcompletion.
The e-Log Book System
The e-Log Book System available online at http://elogbook.cpsp.edu.pk/
, for all PGR's, Supervisors and tutors, its developed as a part of the new MIS under in-house development.Now e-Log is compulsory for upcoming registered trainees in July 2011.
Video Conference and VPN (Virtual Private Network)
CPSP have secure VPN connectivity between all regional centers and head office with comprehensive infrastructure base on standard branded equipment's like CISCO, IBM, HP and APC, on this ideal infrastructure Video Conference facility available at at KHI, LHE, ISB, PEW, MUX, FSD, HDD, UET through Polycom RMX 1000 Unified Conferencing System.During July 2010 to June 2011 approximately 40+ video conference sessions relate with Executive and Faculty Meetings, Educational Activities and Detail Courses and conferences conducted.
Website Development and Maintenance
The Department upgraded the website time to time to make more interactive and informative also responsible for the regular maintenance, upgrading and enhancements of the official CPSP website located at URL: http://www.cpsp.edu.pkCPSP is constantly making use of emerging web technologies. CPSP website is one of the most popular websites on the Internet. It experiences an average of approximately 150,000+ hits per month. The quality of information and web contents has also increased. Brochures and forms of new training programs are continuously added on the website as and when they are offered. All the application forms are available in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format and can be easily downloaded from the website.The website also contains previous issues of the Journal of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan
The previous email system was altered, which has been now rendered fully secure and guaranteed uptime. As it is hosted by Google.com it is expandable to 50,000 email addresses (currently 20,000) and has features to reduce spam and junk emails.The transformation of the CPSP to an E-Enterprise has been initiated by the College Council by the introduction of the triple T (tutor, trainer and trainee). The three Ts are being provided with individual email addresses allowing them direct correspondence with the CPSP. This will result in a rapid notification and feedback system.
Up gradation of office equipment
The Department has begun to upgrade the existing office machinery, which would result in major cutting down of expenses connected with the repair of old and substandard equipment. The main focus was on photocopier machines in the Examinations Department where the consumption was around 1 million copies per year. The DME was provided with laptops and new multimedia devices for increased efficiency in the conduct of its Workshops.
Library and Learning Resources Centre (LRC)
Wireless connections were installed in the library and the number of computers in the LRC was increased resulting in an easier internet access and research facility in the CPSP. Work is in progress to develop an E-Library consisting of surgical videos which would be accessible through the LRC.
Expansion of IT services
Expansion undertaken during the period from July 2010 to June 2011 is briefly described below.
Networking of new buildings at Karachi and Lahore
- The CPSP Network infrastructure was expanded during 2011 to include the new buildings at Karachi and Lahore.High speed fiber optic cable was laid directly from the Network Operations Center to ensure availability of Internet connectivity at high speeds.
- A Fiber based Cisco switch was also installed to ensure optimum and secure connectivity.
Expending network connectivity at CPSP countrywide locations
- As a member institute of the Pakistan Education & Research Network (PERN-2), the CPSP Karachi receives fast Internet connectivity with a bandwidth of 24 MB.
- Networking integration is available at all CPSP Regional Centres through Linux based VPN servers and Video Conferencing facility at Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Multan, Hyderabad, Faisalabad and Quetta.
- MPLS Lear 3 VPN from PTCL for Karachi is provided as aggregate site 8 MB connection and for Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad and Quetta 1 MB per site.
IP Base Telephone Exchange at Karachi
- IP base Telephone exchange (AVAYA) is implemented at the CPSP Karachi.
- IP base telephonic conversation among Regional Centre is through IP Phones.

CPSP IT department is going to implement state of the art IT data center at CPSP Karachi which will cater CPSP's IT related requirements for next 5 year and beyond.
